Reports

Annual and final reports:

We provide annual reports for funding agencies that include an update on juvenile and adult snail kite survival estimates, trends in nesting and productivity, population size, a discussion of site-specific trends and management recommendations. For more information on our reports please contact Robert Fletcher at robert.fletcher@ufl.edu

2016 Annual Report: Snail Kite Demography 2015

In addition to standard reporting, we also include preliminary results from analyses of the direct and indirect effects of hydrology on nest success and snail kite dispersal.

2015 Five-Year Report: Snail Kite Demography 2010-2014

Five year summary emphasizing data collected from 2010-2014. In addition to standard reporting, we also include analyses, findings, and discussion on nest detectability, dispersal biology, foraging preference, foraging habitat, retrospective and prospective population viability analyses, a comparison of modeling approaches for estimating population size, mercury effects, and conservation implications of invasive snails.

2014 Annual Report: Snail Kite Demography 2013

In addition to standard reporting, we also include a detailed description of sampling protocols and analytical methods with an assessment of the abundance estimator. Appendices include update on habitat monitoring.

2013 Annual Report: Snail Kite Demography 2012

In addition to standard reporting, we also include information on the site-specific proportions of exotic snails collected at nests, median shell size of exotic snails collected under foraging perches and nests (2005-2011), discussions on snail kite movements and landscape connectivity, effective management units, and nesting on Lake Okeechobee (nest survival as a function of water stage). Appendices also include findings from 'Reconstructing historical habitat with multistate models' and monitoring foraging habitat and behavior in Water Conservation Area 3A.

2012 Annual Report: Snail Kite Demography 2011

In addition to standard reporting, we also include data and discussion on exotic snails and foraging habitat in Water Conservation Area 3A.

2011 Annual Report: Snail Kite Demography 2010

In addition to standard reporting, we also include preliminary results of population viability analysis. Appendices include a discussion on 'Refining estimates of abundance to account for spatial heterogeneity in detection rates' with proportions of snail kites observed in lake habitat over time and habitat-specific detection probabilities for banded snail kites; 'Determinants of nets failure, brood reduction, and provisioning rates at snail kite nests in relation to the local avian community and nets patch structure'; and 'Foraging ecology and nesting of snail kites on the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes' including home-range estimation, and updates from habitat monitoring in Water Conservation Area 3A.

2010 Annual Report: Snail Kite Demography 2009

In addition to standard reporting, this report also includes discussion on estimating vital rates and population size despite temporary emigration, effects of aging on snail kite vital rates, monitoring nest failure and brood reduction using nest cameras, and snail kite foraging behavior on Lakes Tohopekaliga and Kissimmee.
